The IRS warns taxpayers to guard their online account credentials and consider getting an Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN) to prevent tax-related identity theft. An IP PIN is a 6-digit code that stops others from filing a fake return using your Social Security number or ITIN.
Taxpayers can request an IP PIN even if they don't need to file a return. Those planning to file early in 2027 should get their IP PIN before mid-November when the online system shuts down for maintenance (it reopens in mid-January). The IRS will never ask for your IP PIN by phone, email, text, or social media.
Who it affects: All taxpayers, especially those concerned about identity theft.
